The Big Dipper was beautiful. Mars shone low in the southern sky. And Pleiades, The Seven Sisters, was eye catching in the east.

The heart shaped leaf of the Smooth Carrionflower, Latin name Smilax.

This was a very evasive little beetle.

The latin name (Tetraopes tetrophthalmus) is from the greek meaning”four eyes”. Many beetles have the antennae very near the eye, but in the red milkweed beetle, the adaptation has gone further: the antennal base actually bisects the eye!

The red and black insect is a checkered beetle.
