Joubert Creek

At one point, there is a lovely bank looking down on the creek. This is just about a mile from our farm.

The creek is running high this year, from all the rain we’ve had this summer. I was wondering about the leaf on this fully immersed rock: what is keeping it there?

The patterns of ripples around this rock made me think of mathematics, or music, because of the lines, curves, regularity, contrasts, constant change, forces measurable and immeasurable.IMG_6730

Horsetail

Equisetum is an ancient type of plant, not producing seeds, but reproducing by spores. It also spreads by rhizomes. The plant is also called scouring rush, because the stems contain particles of silica, which have a gritty texture.

Illusion of camouflage

IMG_6417This Thirteen-lined Ground Squirrel is confident that he is invisible to the large-ish human walking nearby, due to his fine camouflage and his totally motionless pose.

Also known as the striped gopher, leopard ground squirrel, or squinney. What beautiful colouring.
